UPDATE: My 2014 Spark EV started having problems recognizing my keyfob. I suspected the 12 volt battery so I charged it for about 20 hours using the charger I mentioned above. So far, no problems.

Just guessing, but...If the car is plugged in and the doors are locked, removing the charging plug without unlocking the doors first will set off the alarm. It may also be due to an intermittent door or hood latch sensor that the car thinks has been opened while the car is actually locked.
