Engineers at General Motors and BMW AG have achieved a major milestone where DC Fast Charging is concerned. Both teams of engineers have worked on the feasibility of DC Combo Fast Charging Stations while conforming to the stringent standards set by Society of Automotive Engineers(SAE).
Tests were conducted and it was found that in the case of both BMW i3 and Chevrolet Spark EV, these vehicles get 80% recharge in a matter of 20 minutes. Other suppliers who also assisted in this testing included ABB, Aker Wade, Eaton and IES while this newly developed SAE Combo DC Fast Charge facility will be ready and available in the coming months.
Major auto manufacturers such as GM, Ford, Chrysler, BMW, Daimler, Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche have all agreed to adopt SAE fast charging connectors which will ensure standardization of DC Fast Charge connectors. Through the adoption of this method, customers will be assured of fast charging while at the same time allowing customers who do not have access to overnight charging at their residences a quick and convenient way of recharging their batteries in a matter of 20 minutes.
