The best upgrade for the GenII 1ET35 drive unit in the Spark EV would be a multi-plate clutch based torque vectoring differential. That would counter torque steer better than a lockable diff without the energy waste of a brake based system. This is mostly only done in FWD sports cars and AWD systems, but the tech already exists. Basically each axle has its own clutch pack that can be engaged incompletely to allow for slipping.

This would make FWD EVs more viable as CUVs. It would also allow for a great AWD system out of the box. Torque could be sent to any wheel or combination of wheels at almost any ratio. This would also allow the RWD motor to be completely detached from the wheels during cruising to improve efficiency.

Electric motors tend to destroy gear sets designed for ICEs, so this might even need to wait for Gen III of the 1ET35.
