When do the brake lights come on in "L" mode?
Is it like the Volt, when you actually push the brake pedal, or does it happen if you remove your foot completely off the accelerator pedal?

Yep. If you pay close attention in the rear view mirror, you can see a slight red glow from the top center brake light when you take your foot off the accelerator and it will stay on as long as the car is decelerating rapidly.

Really? I'll have to check this and maybe have someone from outside confirm it, as my experience with driving in L mode is that others will come up real close as you're slowing down, which would make sense if they don't see any brake lights but you're slowing down significantly. I noticed this more so on freeway offramps and coming to a stop/light from 35+ mph.

There is definitely an accelerometer involved in turning on the brake lights when you're not on the brake pedal. I've watched the rear window at night and seen the brake lights come on while I'm in D and still lightly pressing on the go pedal but slowing considerably because I'm climbing a steep hill. Going downhill, even in L with the foot off the pedals the brake lights may not come on.
