Yes, we had a Chevy Spark EV !! We did a little drag race with my Rav4 EV, and I lost... twice, about 0-50mph. I had way more tire smoke, though :mrgreen:

Tony, thanks for a good time, good food, and good company.

OK, Spark drivers, my Spark was a little lonely. It would like to see some more Sparks at the next gathering.

But the drag race was satisfying. :geek:

THat's good news that your Spark EV won. That would surprise most people over at the Leaf fansite, some who have sworn the RAV would have no problem blowing the doors off the Spark EV. Are you sure Tony floored the juice pedal, or was he just trying to be a courteous host.

At what point did you realize you had it won - from the get go, mid way, or were you pulling away at the end? If I was to guess, I'd say you'd be pulling away. I'd be very interested to see you and one of those Teslas go out on the freeway, position yourselves side by side going 60mph, and then both goose the juice at the same time, first to 90 wins. You might be surprised at what could happen.

Well, you'd have to ask Tony if he was being the polite host during our hot races. He was a polite host at his house, but in our second race he figured it out and stomped it with intention. He had a lot more wheel spin than the Spark, so the Spark jumped ahead right away, and as Tony commented, it just kept on pulling away. Yeh, 60 to 90 would be interesting. I haven't done any formal on-road drag racing since I blew up my '56 small block Chevy in 1964. It's fun to have some pride to be a Chevy guy again :D

Heck, I've blown up more small and big block Chevy V-8's than I can remember!!

On the first run, I had traction control still on and it was in "torque limited" mode, but I didn't really expect much of a race... The Rav4 EV definitely gets the job done for a 4100 pound car. The Spark EV launched first and kept pulling away.

So, round two was a reversed course, and this time I turned off traction control and put it in "Sport" mode (273 foot pounds of torque). This time, the Rav4 EV tires went up in smoke and the Spark EV pulled ahead by a car length. Once the Yokohamas finally got some traction, the Spark EV was still pulling ahead slowly.

For those spark drivers thinking a Tesla is fair game, remember the P85+ Model S has 440 foot pounds of torque.

True, but the Spark has 400 ft/lb, weighs half as much and its long gearing would make for an interesting faceoff - especially at higher speeds where the gearing could make the difference. 60 to 90 is where I think the Spark EV would have its best David vs. Goliath chance.

I know some folks won't get this, but there is no comparison with these torque data points taken from different overall gear reduction.

3000 pound Spark = 4 * 400 = 1600 foot pounds overall
5000 pound Tesla = 10* 440 = 4400 foot pounds overall

Spark = 3000 / 1600 = 1.8 pounds per ft/lb
Tesla = 5000 / 4400 = 1.1 pounds per ft/lb

Both cars are sprightly because they have relatively high power to weigh ratios, however its not even close for a performance Tesla Model S.

Nice to see EV gathering, but why such lousy restaurants in which to eat? Hometown buffet? The amount of methane released from flatulence will counterbalance any greenhouse emissions reduced by driving your EVs to that location.

Oh, I'm the biggest critic of Hometwon Buffet, but it is now in its fourth year.

Here in San Diego, we have met at lots of different places, and it can tell you that the nicer the venue (read expense), the lower the turn out.

But, we've had 50 present in the past. Getting much bigger than that becomes really cumbersome to find places to eat and park.
